THE SECOND PART OF THIS RADIO TALK-BACK SHOW IS THE TALK-BACK SECTION 6 marks
For this segment, you need to select one POST APOCALYPTIC THEME or ISSUE that has been presented in your film - and you need to then open give your opinion on it - and then get three other callers opinion on it (the opinions need to come from different people and be slightly different from your own. Obviously it is understood that some people will get similar messages from films - so although you may create two caller opinions that may be similar - maybe have them come from a different angle)
EXAMPLE:
For example, for the film Wall-E - the opinion segment of your talk back show may look like this:
"A post-apocalyptic theme that has been introduced through the film Wall-E is the theme of overconsumption and humans overarching need to rely on technology. The film makes a statement on the dangers of over-consumption and human reliance on excessive technology by presenting planet earth as uninhabitable due to human greed and inconsideration for the future. My opinion on the issue is that humans in the film have not only made the planet uninhabitable through excessive consumption/consumerism but they have made themselves essentially useless and simply slaves to the automation of their gigantic space vessel and the corporate company B&L (Big and Large). It seems with the recent movements in the world, humans are understanding the benefits and NEED to make our planet more green and sustainable - so I want to open up this issue and theme to the audience and get their opinions"
Opinion 1:
Obviously introduce the caller first and then let them speak
"Look, I think Wall-E is a great film, and on the issue of over-consumerism and sustainability - I reckon we should just live in the now. Frankly - all this sustainable stuff is just a way of the Governments getting more money from us. I don't reckon it's for the good of the environment - I reckon it's another trick - but I'd give Wall-E four out of five stars" SCORE: ****
Opinion 2:
"I really enjoyed Wall-E - and I agree with your opinion because I too feel that the film gives out that positive message of the importance of sustainability and the importance of putting a limit on Consumerism. I think the children of today need to really think about how their actions will influence and affect future generations to come. I think we should all live a more simple life with farms, and helping each other, and abolish all this technology and industry rubbish. I'd really like all of us to become hunter-gatherers and go back to fending for ourselves, and living humble lives. My score for Wall-E is five out of five stars"
SCORE: *****
Opinion 3:
"I really disagree with your opinion man, I think that we should just keep buying and spending - that won't ever happen like what was in Wall-E - our planets never going to go like that! What a joke! What, you think we are going to have robots cleaning up our mess, hahaha - nah I don't think so - I'd give Wall-E two out of five stars" SCORE: **
As you can see above - I have picked to use as an example three very different points of veiw - and they are all quite extreme. All I'm wanting to show you is how you can make them come from different angles and perspectives. Opinion 2 encouraged Wall-E whilst Opinion 1 and Opinion 3 were similar. However - I made Opinion 1 & 3 slightly different. Opinion 1 suggests that they think sustainability is a way to make people spend more money - and it doesn't actually help the environment, and they enjoyed Wall-E, whilst Opinion 3 came from the angle that the issues presented in Wall-E will never happen to us, it's a joke - and we should keep spending and did not like Wall-E that much. As both opinions were similar - you can see how they were still different. This is how I am hoping you will approach the opinion part of the section.
HINTS FOR ASSIGNMENT
Guys and girls - have fun also!! You have the chance to be any type of person you want to be!! Think of these things when your developing your characters for your opinions -
Who are you?
How old are you? (10 y.o? 60 y.o? How will your age influence your opinion?)
Do you like films?
What do you like doing? (long walks on the beach, watching T.V., shopping, gaming)
What kind of personality do you have? (Shy, highly strung, passionate etc.)
These sorts of questions will help you come up with the voice of your character - which will provide you with information you can use to inform their opinion.
